Aaron Dworkin is the Founder and Executive Director of the Sphinx Competition, a national competition for young Black and Latino string players. An accomplished electric and acoustic violinist, he received his Bachelors of Music and Masters of Music in Violin Performance from the University of Michigan School of Music, graduating with high honors. A member of the Golden Key, Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Kappa Lamda National Honor Societies, Aaron is also a recipient of the MLK Spirit Award. He is an active keynote speaker for arts and community organizations and invited juror at music competitions and festivals.


Aaron previously attended the Peabody Institute, the Philadelphia New School and the Interlochen Arts Academy. He has studied with Vladimir Graffman, Berl Senofsky, Jascha Brodsky, John Eaken, Renata Knific, Donald Hopkins and Stephen Shipps. Additionally, Aaron previously studied piano with Robert Alexander Böhnke in Tübingen, Germany.

Aaron has produced and recorded two CDs, entitled Ebony Rhythm and Bar-Talk. He has also transcribed works by Walter Afanasieff, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Terry Lewis, James Harris III and Mariah Carey for electric strings. Aaron also developed Electric Strings 201, a college-level preparatory course in electric string performance. He can also be heard performing on the latest CD release, Healing, by Richard Smallwood.

Aaron is also an accomplished writer with an emphasis on poetry, including his collection of autobiographical poems entitled, They Said I Wasn't Really Black. Aaron has received extensive press coverage, including articles in the Detroit News and Ann Arbor News and, most recently, feature article in the national news monthly, Emerge.

 

 

In addition to his academic credits, Aaron is Founder and Executive Director of the Sphinx Competition, a national competition for young Black and Latino string players. With over $90,000 in prizes and scholarships, the competition showcases the top minority talent in the country as well as established and breakthrough minority composers. Aaron offers his strong organizational and administrative background through experience in the non-profit industry, in which he co-founded and held the position of Executive Director of the Jumpstart Organization, a non-profit homeless organization. In addition, Aaron founded The Bard, a literary magazine with a readership of over 40,000 throughout southeast Michigan. He also brings experience in the for-profit industry, having previously served as Southern Regional Coordinator for Super Sales of America, Inc., responsible for a budget of over two million dollars.
